Rowlands Pharmacy celebrates 200 years in style
For the first time in its two hundred year history, Rowlands Pharmacy brought together retail staff from across all of its five hundred plus branches and coached them to Runcorn to learn more about the company and where it is heading over the next few years.
Eight “mini conference” over four days provided the opportunity for 800 support staff to meet face to face with Rowlands senior management team and enjoy an action packed programme of customer training, delivered by the Rowlands regional managers, Probiotec, McNeill and Reckitt Benckiser.
Rowlands laid on an exhibition so that delegates could easily meet the various head office teams and put faces to the people they speak to daily by phone. Everyone from payroll through to marketing had a stand and a story to tell.
Kenny Black, Rowlands MD explained the rationale for the event to delegates :
“Improving communication across the business is critical for us. We know, because our customers tell us, that you are the ones, making Rowlands different. You are the ones who deliver every day for our patients. If we want to make a change and it is going to be harder for you to do that well, we want to know about it. The best way to improve communication is to meet face to face. That is what this event is all about.”
After a presentation of the trophies for business leader of the year and retail business of the year won recently at the National C+D Pharmacy Awards, Kenny shared the Rowland’s story.
It began 200 hundred years ago in Wrexham when Edward Rowland bought his very first pharmacy. Today, Rowlands – the oldest pharmacy chain in the UK – has over 5,000 employees. It is a modern pharmacy business, totally committed to developing professional services and clinical care for its loyal, local customer base.
Staff has clearly worked and played hard. The positive feedback was overwhelming. Weighed down with goody bags full of information from the exhibition, they chattered all the way to the conference sessions.
“It’s been a great success,” chimed Jill and Steve, Rowland’s Regional Managers, smiling broadly “People’s eyes have really been opened. They are working away in their shop. Then they come here. Suddenly they realise there are more people out there – in the next town or village even. It’s exactly

I have done various photography jobs for Rowlands up and down the country and the staff are always really friendly, fun and helpful. Thanks to everybody at the staff conference for making me feel welcome and being so helpful and a pleasure to work with.
Thanks Rowlands
Rowlands is my favourite pharmacy client, and working with them is a pleasure. As the photos show, the conference was a huge success. I am looking forward to next year’s event already!
Running 16 separate training sessions on the Hair Loss category was a daunting challenge. However the interactivity, interest and feeback from those who attended made it all worthwhile!
Colin,
A little note to thank you for your input to the conference last week, the photos on your site are excellent; capture the mood very well and the use of the Rowland homepage with write up are fabulous.
I hope you enjoyed the day and look forward to our next venture.
Thanks again
Kenny
