Sunset over Kefalonia

Landscape and Travel Photography Kefalonia or Cephalonia

One of the downsides to being a full time professional commercial photographer, and there isn’t many, is I spend all my time shooting client briefs and find it difficult to find the time to indulge my passion for landscape photography. Most of us struggle to strike a balance between family, work and hobbies but because landscape photography is such a time consuming activity it is even more difficult. These days the only time I can truly indulge my passion for landscape photography is on holiday and I am lucky enough to have a wife who also shares my passion for scenic beauty. This year after a recommendation from a friend and a distant memory of a movie I watched some 15 years ago we chose to go to the Greek Island of Kefalonia or Cephalonia depending on where you come from. These are the images I captured during my limited stay on this beautiful island.

Landcape Photography Assos Kefalonia

The small, stunningly beautiful setting and perhaps the most romantic location on the island of Kefalonia. The Assos headland is on the west coast of the island with the hamlet nestling in its horse-shoe shaped harbour. The whole area is encompassed by breath taking coastal scenery of rugged white rocks and turquoise sea with hillsides covered in forests of cypress and pine.

Landscape Photography Myrtos Beach Kefalonia

Myrtos Beach Kefalonia is ranked as one of the top 5 most beautiful beaches in the world. The first image here is the view of Myrtos beach that is the most popular because it is taken from a lay by where all the coach tours depart for photo opportunities. To get the other images I had to spend some hours walking and climbing the surrounding cliffs looking for the perfect view point.

Landscape Photography Fiskardo or Fiscardo Kefalonia

After some initial holiday research about the island of Kefalonia we decided to use Fiskardo as a base. It is the northern most Port in Kefalonia and has easy access to the vast majority of the islands beauty spots and attractions. We stayed in the Hotel Almyra which sits just outside Fiskado and offers stunning views of the port, mountains and surrounding areas. In addition to the views and easy access to Fiskardo and surrounding areas the Hotel Almyra is a beautiful hotel both inside and out with great service and friendly efficient staff.

Subterranean Lake and Cave of Melisani – The Cave of Melissani -Kefalonia

No visit to the beautiful island of Kefalonia would be complete without a visit to the Subterranean Lake and Cave of Melisani. I explained to the ferryman that I wanted to take some pictures but the rocking of the boat and the low light in the cave would make it difficult so he agreed to drop me off on the island in the middle of the lake (not sure if he was supposed to). This image is a blend of 5 different exposures merged together to create on picture using a technique called HDR.

Images of Goa India

Here is a  selection of photographs taken whilst on holiday in Goa India. The gallery contains landscape photography taken in GOA and some portraits of the people of India.  All the indian people who appear in the photos from GOA gave permission to be photographed and some of the poorer people I paid a small fee to help them with their daily struggle for survival. The images were taken throughout North Goa at  Anjuna Flea Market, Anjuna Beach, Chapora, Arambol and Terekhol North Tip of GOA.

Whitby Abbey Award Winning Landscape

This image of Whitby Abbey is another image I am very proud of as it was awarded the coveted Gold Award for Landscape photography from the S.W.P.P. As you can see the image has excellent depth of field and the light really brings out all the tones and textures of this iconic building. The reflection of the Abbey in the water acts as a leading line for the veiwer and really adds to the images depth and composition.

Whitby cottages

The mystery and beauty of Whitby Abbey has inspired a multitude of artists, from the exquisite watercolours of J.M.W. Turner, to the dark writing of Bram Stoker, creator of Dracula. The eponymous vampire comes ashore at Whitby – both the town and the Abbey’s majestic graveyard feature heavily in this classic horror story. This legacy has led to Whitby’s macabre yet charming reputation. There are exciting ghost walks, charming Whitby cottages (said by some to be haunted!) and Whitby Goth Weekend, a tongue in cheek celebration of gothic culture and Bram Stoker’s masterpiece.

Derwent Reservoir Award Winning Landscape

Landscape photography requires a lot of patience and taking this shot of the Derwent reservoir in Derbyshire was no exception. I had to wait for the water to be still to create the perfect reflection. I also had to wait for the light  on the woodland to show the beautiful golden autumn colours of the trees. This landscape photograph won me another Gold award for Landscape photography from the SWPP.  The reservoir is located on the A57 near to the YHA Crowden Youth Hostel

The reservoir is one of a network of reserviors between sheffield and Glossop used to train Lancaster Bomber pilots to deploy the bouncing bomb. During the war the pilots put the training into practice and breached German Dams the  Möhne and Eder. The dams were also used as a film location in the black and white film The Dambusters. By the time they remade the film in colour the war was over so the colour version of the film was actually made in Germany.

This is an image I am very proud of as it won the highly coveted S.W.P.P. Gold Award for Landscape photography. The S.W.P.P. esteemed judges are highly critical and only give awards to images deemed to be of the highest standard in the country. This image went on to be published in Professional Imagemaker magazine and  has been printed and framed for a handful of discerning buyers. The image is the view from Dovestone sailing club looking out across Dovestone Reservoir Greenfields Saddleworth. The jetty in the image often moves with the wind and under current of the reservoir so I had to be patient waiting for both light and tide. My advice to anybody looking to take up landscape photography is get into the same mindset as a fisherman; be patient and aware that you may sit for hours and not catch a fish. Don’t think this is a wasted trip because although you have not come back with a great picture, you have had the opportunity to relax and to meditate on the beauty of the landscape.
