In her capacity as Assembly Member for Wrexham, Lesley Griffiths, who is also Welsh Minister for Health and Social Services, has officially opened a new Health and Wellbeing centre in Rhosddu.

The Rowlands Pharmacy branch, which leads the way for its smoking cessation service in Wales, is now divided up into colour coded areas to make it easier for customers to find products, and make them feel more comfortable approaching staff for help with prescriptions or general health advice.

Ms Griffiths cut the ribbon to officially mark the re-opening of the store and was given a guided tour of the new dispensary and an opportunity to sample the free health checks available to customers.

The Pharmacy offers many free services such as blood pressure monitoring, weight management, diabetes risk assessment and smoking cessation. Rowlands also offer a free medicine check-up service, giving patients and customers the opportunity to sit down with a pharmacist to discuss their medication and answer any queries or concerns they may have.

Rhosddu Pharmacist Joanne Kember, who recently gained a Diploma in Clinical Practice in the Community Pharmacy from Cardiff University, works very closely with local voluntary groups and goes out into the community to give health presentations.

The Rhosddu store operates a successful prescription collection and delivery service, with 96% of the prescriptions it handles using this service. The Pharmacy also stocks a range of Celebrity Slim packages with a variety of delicious snacks to help aid weight loss.

Rowlands Area Manager Beth Taylor said:
“Pharmacies play a major role in the health of the local community, which is due to the availability of a broad range of services to help meet their healthcare needs. We’re delighted to be taking the pharmacy into a whole new era and the new layout makes it easier for patients and customers to find what they are looking for.”

The Pharmacy has built a good relationship with Ms Griffiths, who has supported the branch on many occasions including Breast Cancer Awareness Week.

Beth added:
“We were really pleased that Ms Griffiths could take time out of a busy schedule to visit the newly refitted and refurbished pharmacy. The visit highlighted the importance of the community pharmacy and the range of care services available.”

Lesley Griffiths AM added:

“I was delighted to be invited to open the new Health and Wellbeing centre at Rhosddu, which offers a much improved experience for customers and staff alike, and I thank staff for inviting me. ”The occasion also gave me an opportunity to take a free, five minute Diabetes risk assessment. I applaud the work Rowland’s is doing to promote free, preventative healthcare and advice. Keeping people informed in this way is a powerful tool which can help manage and even prevent conditions such as Diabetes.”

Rowlands Pharmacy has over 500 branches throughout the UK. For details of your nearest Rowlands branch, or to find out more about the services Rowlands offers visit: www.rowlandspharmacy.co.uk.

Rowland’s Pharmacy Staff Conference 2011

Rowlands Pharmacy held its 2nd annual Employee Conference at the Holiday Inn Runcorn in June the theme of which was ‘Pride in Everything’

Delegates were invited to a Welcome Message and Dinner and given overnight accommodation with the conference taking place the following day. With delegates arriving and departing each day, (750 attendees over the 5 day period), there were plenty of logistics to contend with but the Conference Team made sure that everything ran to schedule.

The Welcome Message was delivered by Managing Director, Kenny Black and was followed by dinner. This gave the opportunity for staff from across the country to mix with the many Head Office staff that were in attendance.

The conference itself was split into two areas, an exhibition room and a lecture theatre.

The exhibition room was filled with stands from suppliers and Head Office departments. Suppliers were able to talk through and offer demonstrations of their latest products while Head Office departments had the opportunity to fully explain their role and answer any key questions.

In the lecture theatre delegates were entertained with interactive presentations from suppliers and Head Office staff. However, the highlight of the day was the team building session which saw 6 genuine rugby players burst through the doors and perform the Haka to a startled audience who were subsequently taught the traditional Māori dance.

All staff had a thoroughly enjoyable time and are looking forward to next year’s being bigger and better than ever!

Right Said Fred Latest Images Capital Radio

Right Said Fred performing I am too Sexy at capital radio as part of comeback tourThis week BBC Radio 2 has special Guest’s Right Said Fred choosing the tracks of their years. Hearing it reminded me about the pictures I took for Capital Radio earlier this year 2011. As part of their comeback tour 2011 Right Said Fred visited Capital Radio in Manchester where they did a wonderfully heartfelt interview about their lives and careers since they were massive in the 90’s.  This included the death of Richard’s long-term partner, whom he described as a beautiful man, their time spent in Amsterdam where they were massive and being ripped off by their record company.

Brother’s Richard and Fred were genuinely nice guys and were a pleasure to photograph. They performed amazing acoustic versions of ‘I am too Sexy’ and ‘Deeply Dippy’ to a few members of the Capital Radio team and even handed out some instruments for them to play along. As you can see they have not aged a bit and still look and sound fantastic.

Pharmacy Assistant of the Year: Rowlands Pharmacy assistant of the year 2011 Karina Lamb Karina Lamb Sowerby Bridge store, Halifax

One of the pleasures of visiting Sowerby Bridge is the greeting and smile you receive from Karina when you walk through the door.  Every customer that steps inside this Pharmacy is made to feel special and welcome and nothing is too much trouble.
Positivity flows out of this individual to every initiative or new direction we try to take the branch.  Celebrity slim has been a roaring success in Sowerby Bridge and in no small part is down to Karina, she tried CS and lost weight on the programme and this has been communicated to all her customers.

Driver of the Year: Jonathon Astle from Chesterfield Road store, Mansfield

Rowlands pharmacy driver of the year 2011 Jonathon AstleJonathon stands out due to his attitude.  He is very popular and the patients he delivers to on a regular basis look forward to his visit as he takes time to talk to them. Jonathon receives regular requests from patients and staff at the local GP surgeries to deliver medicines urgently which means he often works past his contracted finish time whilst collecting scripts and waiting for them to be dispensed, but Jonathon does this with willingly as his priority is to his patients and wants to make sure they get their medication.

Technician of the Year: Phyllis O’Connor from Balmore Road store, Glasgow

Rowlands Dispenser of the year 2011Phyllis demonstrates commitment and dedication to her role.  She makes it her priority to know her patients and their healthcare needs and to do everything in her power to meet these needs. She also supports and encourages others in the team in taking the same approach.
She goes beyond the job role and dedicates a lot of her time to help new pharmacists to develop their personal and professional skills to equip them for the ever evolving role of a community pharmacist in Scotland.

Head Office Department of the Year: Locum Board

Rowlands Head office department of the year 2011 locum board Locum Board are a team of 17 individuals who consistently communicate with every branch, area manager and head office department.  They deal with holiday requests, pharmacist sickness and any other reasons why a pharmacist isn’t able to be in branch.  The team always try to please the branch to help them maintain their level of service whether that is proactively when it’s planned absence or reactively when an unplanned absence. Last year they sourced Locum cover for 490,000 hours which is 61,250 days, or 167 years! This included: 85,000 holiday hours per year, 21,000 sick hours per year, 45 emergencies on 1st December 2010 due to snow – the biggest ever emergency day!

Pharmacist of the Year: Christine Shaw from Lepton store, Huddersfield

Rowlands pharmacist of the year 2011 Christine ShawChristine is a highly experienced Pharmacist who has been with Rowlands Pharmacy for twenty years.  She is well liked within the community and nothing is ever too much trouble for her patients and her staff.

It is always a pleasure to go into the Lepton Branch as you always greeted with a smile and friendly help.  Christine is very keen on developing services within the community and enjoys spending time with patients carrying out medicine reviews.

Pre Registration Pharmacist of the Year: Danielle Watt from Ellon store, Aberdeenshire

Rowlands Pre registered pharmacist of the year 2011 Danielle Watt Danielle’s attitude throughout the Pre-Reg year has been outstanding. She spent time planning what she wanted to get out of her Pre-Reg year and took every opportunity to develop herself and others whilst constantly reviewing her progress against her goals.

She has impressed her tutor, branch staff and the training team alike by the way that she has dealt with challenging situations and unusual circumstances.  Danielle has been proactive in seeking out opportunities to test and apply her clinical knowledge in difficult and unusual circumstances with patient care as her priority.

Area Manager of the Year: Debby Crockford, Area 4 (Hampshire/Portsmouth area)

Rowlands Pharmacy area manager of the year 2011 Debby CrockfordReading the pharmacy press over the last year or so you couldn’t fail to notice the publicity generated by Healthy Living Pharmacy. This was a project introduced in Portsmouth and right from the very beginning Debby threw herself into the challenge of making HLP a success for Rowlands in Portsmouth. To date under Debby’s stewardship Rowlands has the most HLPs in Portsmouth with her pharmacies at Kingston Crescent, Fratton Rd, Highland Rd, Winter Rd and recently Eastney Rd all achieving Level One status which is a credit to all the staff involved and Debby herself. In fact there are two more pharmacies that have almost achieved this status and comparing  this to Lloyds and Boots, who have only three HLPs between them in Portsmouth, this is a fantastic achievement and we look forward to Rowlands having the first pharmacy to achieve Level 2 status.

Branch of the Year: Kingston Crescent, Portsmouth

Rowlands Pharmacy Branch of the year 2011Last year the branch managed more than a 40% increase in their prescription volume following relocation into a local surgery. They have impressed the GPs so much with their health promotion that the surgery is writing to all their patients instructing them to visit the pharmacy for a BP check.

The Kingston Crescent team have been so proactive with the Healthy Living Pharmacy scheme that they were recognised by the PCT as Healthy Living Pharmacy of the year and their manager, Pam, as Healthy Living Pharmacy leader of the year.

Outstanding Achievement Award: Stephen Allen from Arnside and Milnthorpe store, Cumbria

Rowlands Pharmacy outstanding achievement award 2011Stephen was on his delivery route when one of his housebound customers failed to open the door.  Immediately Stephen knew that something wasn’t right and decided to investigate further.  When opening the letterbox he heard a noise and at this point called the Police and persuaded them to break into the house.

Once inside they found the lady on the floor, dehydrated and suffering from hyperthermia.  She had been there for at least a couple of days and Police told Stephen that he had saved this lady’s life.  She was taken to hospital where she made a full recovery. This story shows what can be achieved when you go that extra mile for the sake of our customers.

Kenny Black, MD, Rowlands Pharmacy said:

We are extremely proud of our staff and the difference they have made to the organisation. We have created these awards to recognise and reward outstanding achievements and demonstrate how much we value our staff.”

“I would like to congratulate everyone who was shortlisted, as well as winners, because it shows they are providing an excellent customer experience within our branches. There are staff that will go beyond the call of duty to help our patients and customers and we believe now, more than ever, the importance of rewarding and recognising excellence.”

“We look forward to next year’s awards and to recognising more of your achievements”

Brown Shipley bowled over by cricket stars’ support for Macmillan

On Thursday 14 October, private banking firm Brown Shipley celebrated its bicentenary by holding a pre-Ashes charity dinner and auction with some of the biggest names in English cricket and I was honoured to be asked to take the portrait above.

The event, held at Manchester’s Midland Hotel, raised more than £2,000 and was one of several Brown Shipley have held this year in support of Macmillan Cancer Support, so far raising a staggering £75,000 to help the charity reach more people affected by cancer.

England players Jimmy Anderson, Stuart Broad and Eoin Morgan attended, along with MC for the night David Lloyd, the popular pundit and former coach. All four cricket stars were on hand to answer questions about their forthcoming highly anticipated Ashes series.

Lancashire and England bowler Jimmy Anderson said: “I am delighted that all proceeds from this event will find their way to Macmillan, such a richly deserving cause. I also have other events supporting Macmillan planned on the back of England’s Ashes tour. After all, it is likely most of us will be affected either directly or indirectly by cancer some time in our lives.”

Brown Shipley’s Managing Director, Ian Sackfield, added: “We are really pleased with our association with Macmillan. In this our bicentenary year, everyone at Brown Shipley is working hard to make this year special for Macmillan – a fitting legacy for 2010 and beyond.”

A champagne reception greeted the 100 or so guests at the event, who included Brown Shipley employees, select clients, and two key figures from Macmillan, Ann Paul, Head of High Level Giving and Claire Gage, Donor Recognition & Stewardship Coordinator. The cricketing celebrities swapped tables during the dinner, giving all the guests the chance for a brush with sporting stardom. The auction – which had guests bidding for prizes including an exclusive holiday to Cyprus – drew a memorable evening to a close.
